    EMILY

I was born and raised in Cherry Hill, NJ and presently live in Plymouth Meeting, PA. I have taken many turns before becoming a nitpicker. I went to college for environmental science and worked in the hazardous waste industry for many years before starting a family (all good background for the head lice biz wouldn’t you say?!) Once my children entered elementary school it was time to help support the family. At the same time, M.J. Eckert, my college roommate, was starting Lice Happens. I am not sure it was divine intervention or just bad luck but my daughter contracted lice 3 months after the creation of the company!

I drove 2 hours to Annapolis for M.J. to rid my daughter of the pesky little critters and while there thought to myself,” I would be really good at this.” After many weeks of training, I started helping families in South Jersey and the Philadelphia metropolitan area. It has been 6 wonderful years helping families beat the bugs! What I like most about this job is walking into a home full of stress and anxiety and then walking out of the home knowing that mom will have a good night’s sleep and life will go back to normal. I have also enjoyed building a great team of lice specialists that are out in the field everyday educating families to be lice experts!

What To Expect During Your Lice Treatment

When lice happens, what you need most is someone who shows up fast, works discreetly, and solves the problem the first time. That is what we do. Our certified Lice Treatment Specialists handle everything from the moment we arrive, so you do not have to worry about a thing.

    Our Lice Removal Process

    • Schedule your appointment. Call or text our Lice Happens LiceLine, and a specialist can often reach your home the same day. We work around your schedule, including evenings and weekends.
    • Discreet arrival. Your specialist arrives in plain clothing with all equipment in hand. No marked vehicles, no signage, just a professional at your door.
    • Family-wide screening. We check every member of the household, not only the person with symptoms. Head lice spread quickly through head-to-head contact, so catching every case in one visit prevents re-infestation later.
    • Non-toxic treatment. For anyone with an active infestation, we apply safe, pesticide-free products. No harsh chemicals and no worry about what goes on your child’s scalp.
    • Thorough manual comb-outs. The comb-out is the step that clears the infestation. Over-the-counter treatments skip it entirely. Using a professional lice comb and a proven technique, we remove every louse and nit by hand, lifting nits straight off the hair shaft.
    • Education and follow-up guidance. Before we leave, we walk you through simple follow-up treatment steps and what to watch for. You will know exactly what to do going forward.

What Our Services Do Not Include

    • No unnecessary home sanitizing services
    • No gimmicky gadgets or shortcuts
    • No harsh chemical treatment products
    • No added downtime built into the visit
    • No pressure to buy services your family does not need

Lice Screenings & Treatment for Philadelphia-Area Schools & Camps

Lice Happens partners with schools, daycares, and summer camps across Greater Philadelphia to provide on-site lice screening and treatment. Whether you are responding to an active outbreak, running routine head checks before camp opens, or preparing for back-to-school season, our certified specialists handle it discreetly and without disrupting your day.

Our school and camp services include:

    • Full-class or full-camp screenings to identify active cases quickly and discreetly, with the goal of keeping everyone safe and lice-free, rather than embarrassing any child
    • On-site treatment for confirmed cases, so children do not need to be sent home mid-day
    • Education for staff, parents, and students on how to spot lice early and prevent re-infestation
    • Discreet communication and documentation that keeps families informed without spreading stigma

Lice Happens was founded by a registered nurse with years of experience as a school nurse, so we understand how to balance thorough treatment with the realities of a busy classroom or camp. We work alongside administrators and staff to keep things calm, organized, and focused on getting kids back to their day.

To schedule a screening or set up a service agreement, call our LiceLine at 610.952.3691 or email emily@licehappens.com. We will build a plan that fits your schedule and your community.

    Lice Treatment FAQs

Here are some of the questions we hear most from Philadelphia families.

How much does professional lice removal cost in Philadelphia, PA?

Pricing depends on your family size, hair length and density, and how severe the infestation is. Call our LiceLine for an accurate estimate before you schedule. We keep pricing straightforward, with no bait and switch.

Will insurance cover lice removal treatment?

Most standard health insurance plans do not directly cover professional lice removal. The cost is usually an eligible expense under an HSA/FSA, so you may be able to pay with pre-tax dollars. Check with your HSA or FSA administrator to confirm before your appointment.

How long does professional lice treatment take?

Most in-home visits run one to a few hours, depending on how many people need screening and the length and thickness of their hair. We work through each head carefully rather than rushing, because a complete comb-out is what clears the infestation.

How long until head lice are fully gone?

Active crawling lice come off during your visit, and the infestation breaks once every louse and nit is removed by hand. We screen for and lift any newly hatched nymphs, then send you home with follow-up treatment steps to catch stragglers and confirm your family stays lice-free.

What kills head lice most effectively?

A meticulous manual comb-out with a professional metal lice comb works far better than any spray or shampoo alone. Many lice populations now resist common over-the-counter ingredients such as pyrethrins and permethrin, which is how super lice spread and why infestations keep coming back. Manual removal breaks the lice life cycle in one visit, without harsh chemicals.

Can head lice live on pillows?

Not for long. Head lice are parasitic insects that depend on the warmth and food of a human scalp, and they typically die within a day or two off a head. Washing pillowcases and recently worn bedding in your usual detergent at a temperature suited to the fabric is plenty. There is no need to bag up the house.

How did I get lice all of a sudden?

Head lice spread mainly through head-to-head contact, which is why they move so fast among kids at school, sleepovers, and sports. You will often notice itching first, then spot tiny lice eggs glued near the scalp or crawling lice and adult lice in the hair. Head lice live only on the scalp and differ from pubic lice. A quick head check on every family member is the best way to know who needs treatment.

As I told you several times before your company was the only one that responded to me when I asked for help…I still can’t believe to this day no other company who claim to do what you do called or emailed me back…. I am glad that I found your website and am glad that the other companies didn’t respond because I found a place that truly cares about what they do and cares about the people they treat.

Today I took her in and for the first time EVER was super confident while the nurse checked her head. Before when I would do the usual treatments, I was biting my nails praying the nurse didn’t find that one nit that I missed. Sure enough, she passed with flying colors. Before I left, I handed over a Lice Happens flyers and assured the nurse that if there is anyone with this issue to please give them your contact so they can get the same amazing help that I did. I found out that 2 other students in my daughters class also have lice and normally I would cringe but with the clean slate and knowledge that Lice Happens gave me I know that I can now handle it.

I really appreciate that you were both conscience of the price issue and willing to be flexible on the time/money spent. I will definitely recommend you folks to others, and I am pretty sure there are others at my children’s school!

    • Having been dealing with this annoying problem for the last month I finally threw my hands up and decided to call in the professionals. They were at my house within an hour and completely put my mind at ease. They taught me everything I needed to do with my house and how to prevent us from getting it again in the future. If you have been battling head lice like I was do not worry- call Lice Happens! They are so knowledgeable, professional and my kids loved them. Amazing service!
    • Peter was amazing! I am visiting from Australia and was in a total panic. He arrived at my hotel room exactly on time and was so reassuring and lovely. What a pleasure, the experience was as easy and simple as it possibly could be!
    • Peter was amazing! It was my first time as a parent dealing with lice and I was very panicked. I called the service and he picked up within a couple minutes, calmed me down and was at our apartment in Manhattan by 10am. He had a very deep understanding of lice (who knew!) and did a thorough job of making sure they had all been removed and explaining the follow up. I could not recommend enough! Thank you!
