I was born and raised in Cherry Hill, NJ and presently live in Plymouth Meeting, PA. I have taken many turns before becoming a nitpicker. I went to college for environmental science and worked in the hazardous waste industry for many years before starting a family (all good back ground for the head lice biz wouldn’t you say?!) Once my children entered elementary school it was time to help support the family. At the same time, M.J. Eckert, my college roommate, was starting Lice Happens. I am not sure it was divine intervention or just bad luck but my daughter contracted lice 3 months after the creation of the company!
I drove 2 hours to Annapolis for M.J. to rid my daughter of the pesky little critters and while there thought to myself,” I would be really good at this.” After many weeks of training, I started helping families in South Jersey and the Philadelphia metropolitan area. It has been 6 wonderful years helping families beat the bugs! What I like most about this job is walking into a home full of stress and anxiety and then walking out of the home knowing that mom will have a good night’s sleep and life will go back to normal. I have also enjoyed building a great team of lice specialists that are out in the field everyday educating families to be lice experts!

Tracey was in technology sales for her entire corporate career. After years of success, she decided to go in a different direction, thereby allowing her more flexibility and freedom that comes from ‘being your own boss’. She decided to leave Corporate America and venture out on her own and be a business owner. Yes, she left to go and NITPICK. Yes, you all read that correctly! As in HEAD LICE! Why Lice Happens? Well, the intrigue came from my own life experience with head lice. Yes, my children had lice, and their friends (and their friends!) had lice. I do not know a single parent (including myself) that didn’t go nuts each time their child contracted head lice! Parents continue to struggle with the frustration, confusion, shame, and fear due to all the misinformation on the internet, the scary pesticidal products, and silly gadgets and home remedies to choose from. That’s not to mention the ‘ick’ factor that the topic holds – just whisper “head lice” at school or camp and see what happens! So, I have decided to venture into this mysterious lice world in order to help families finally get their lives back to normal.

A friend was singing the praises of the service she received from Lice Happens after having tried unsuccessfully to eradicate head lice from her family for weeks. She was so impressed with the efficiency and professionalism of the treatment specialist and the process that I inquired about servicing the Baltimore community. As I listened, an unwelcome memory involuntarily entered my consciousness — that of my husband and I returning from Guatemala with our adopted daughter not realizing at the time she wasn’t alone!!! The time and effort of combing through her hair, the awful smelling products, and taking care of the home was beyond overwhelming for this new mom! I love working for Lice Happens because it’s so rewarding to treat a family and leave them empowered to conquer the situation on their own in the future. As a former teacher, I get to use my “tricks of the trade” to help calm parents and make the treatment a positive experience for children.

We are the proud owners of Lice Happens in Boston, MA. Lice Happens is a family owned business started in 2009 in Annapolis Maryland. After working as a school nurse for 15 years and seeing countless cases of head lice, my Aunt Mary Jane and her business partner Nancy realized that there had to be a better way to help families dealing with head lice. Fast forward several years and thousands of success stories later- it became clear that Lice Happens’ soothing kid-friendly approach and proven methods were needed elsewhere! After working with my parents for Lice Happens for several years in New Jersey, I realized I had finally found my calling-helping families deal with the frustration of battling head lice. The idea of owning my own business has always been a dream of mine so I decided to branch out on my own and start helping families in Massachusetts. Since attending college in Providence, Jamie and I have loved the New England area. The ability to live here and treat and educate people about head lice with our natural nontoxic process makes my job that much more enjoyable. Jamie and I reside in Somerville and are always happy to travel to homes to meet and help anyone who is struggling with head lice. When we leave your home you will feel knowledgeable and capable of dealing with this on your own, if it should ever happen again. We’re proud to say that Lice Happens is our business. So, if lice has happened to you – call the professionals at Lice Happens.

Michelle and Craig Lohrli are the very first franchisee and the first Lice Happens presence in the West Coast. A long-time marketing and advertising professional, Michelle wanted to get out of the rat race and venture into something more meaningful to do while still allowing her the flexibility to be a full-time mom to their 8-yr old daughter. Her marketing background along with Craig’s many years of working in the customer service industry are a great jump-off point into reaching out to this territory’s untapped market. Their business philosophy is to treat each and every family with care and compassion to empower them with the right tools and fact-based information so they can be one-step ahead in dealing with head lice. They want to turn an otherwise stressful situation into a positive experience. What’s the most important part of being a Lice Specialist? Michelle says that it is being able to bring calm and normalcy to families whose daily lives are disrupted with the often time-consuming battle with head lice, and providing them the knowledge and tools to turn the tables on these bugs once and for all. When parents tell her that they are grateful to have found Lice Happens and appreciate what she does, she considers it a win-win.

Helping a family deal with a lice situation is more than just removal. When I go to a home, the family is usually stressed and sometimes embarrassed. Besides treating the problem, I educate families, provide comfort and debunk common myths. By the time I leave they’re feeling at ease, in control, armed with facts and know-how. And because it takes time and persistence to comb out every last nit, I get to know the family and play some old favorites like 20 questions and I SPY. I’ve even been known to help with homework. I find it very rewarding to see a family be restored to sanity!

I took my background as a teacher, joined it with my interest in parasitology as a Veterinary Technician, and mixed it with my love of helping others to become a head lice treatment specialist at Lice Happens in the Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill communities. Lice Happens’ focus on education is something I whole-heartedly support, as the myths about head lice continue to persist. Also, the non-toxic treatment offers peace of mind to all of us concerned by the less safe options that are available. I hope to help families in the Triangle area let go of the worry, stress, and shame that comes with a head lice infestation. When I leave your home after a visit, your life can go back to normal– you will be empowered with the tools and knowledge to guarantee continued success!

A few years ago when I heard someone mention head lice I thought back to those days in elementary when the school nurse pulled kids into the hallway to check for the little critters crawling in our hair. Fast forward to present time and I’m now regularly doing battle with the six legged creatures known to my fellow entomology enthusiasts as pediculus humanus capitis. From the beginning I’ve found this profession to be a very rewarding experience. A month ago I was referred to a 12 year old girl who had been battling pediculosis for more than a year. To make the situation even more difficult, her mother had passed away four months prior to my visit. While talking to her father I sensed they were giving up hope after fighting a losing battle for such a long time. Product after product was unsuccessful. Home remedies didn’t work. I reassured them both that after I left her hair would be long, blonde and silky like she once remembered and she could return to school full of confidence. In the days after when I spoke to her father he was very grateful and amazed by the results. It wasn’t until the following week that I felt the biggest sense of satisfaction with her case. The school nurse and secretary were shocked by what they saw. They’d never seen such a severe case lice and nit free in 24 hours. Her teachers said she had become a different person since my visit. Smiling, laughing, and raising her hand to volunteer in class like never before. Having an impact on a child’s life to this degree can have a lasting impact not only on their lives, but mine as well. It’s a profession I won’t be trading in anytime soon.

I wish Lice Happens had been around when my daughter contracted head lice! As a parting gift from an otherwise successful year in first grade, my daughter started summer vacation with a head full of lice. Fueled by panic and misinformation, the following weeks were spent with her stuffed animals in plastic bags, washing mountains of laundry, pesticide treatments and 3 hour a day sessions of combing her hair. Hardly the kick off to summer we had anticipated! The old adage, “If I only knew then what I know now” could not be more fitting. It is so satisfying to be a part of the Lice Happens team as a thoroughly trained and certified Lice Treatment Specialist. Using non-toxic products, proper combing techniques, and educating my clients allows me to eliminate the unnecessary trials and tribulations of treating head lice. Ending each session with a stress-free client who is well informed and empowered is the greatest reward.

When my son was in grade school, I received an email once or twice a year about lice occurring in his class. We were lucky, I guess, as he never contracted them. Lice happened to other families, but not ours!!! My son is now an adult and I had become a nanny/babysitter for a few local families and loved having “little people” back in my life. Then the itching started. Low and behold, I had lice. I ran to the drugstore, bought the over-the-counter stuff and went through the process. Coincidentally, I had also recently been in touch with an old friend and knew she was working for Lice Happens. Figuring what the heck, I gave her a call and she gave me a quick education on why the OTC product would probably not work and that most likely, in a week or two, I would have the little buggers back. She walked me through the Lice Happens protocol (we live hundreds of miles apart) and I followed her directions to a “T”…and became a believer!!! Since becoming a Lice Treatment Specialist, my hope is to help other families as my friend helped me. Richmond area lice, watch out!!!

I’ve been in the business of helping people for the majority of my career and was quite intrigued with the level of service and expertise offered by Lice Happens. That said, joining the team was an honor and I am happy to provide a quality solution to a pesky problem that simply “happens.” Assisting families within the comfort of their own homes while creating trust and confidence as a “Specialist” is a gratifying and humbling experience that I look forward to again and again.
