    About Califon, New Jersey

    Califon is a borough that is located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. With a population of just above 1,000 people, the borough is not heavily populated, but it comes with a rich history. Califon came into existence in 1918 when it was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey legislature.  The name of the borough has in interesting history. The name is probably derived from a bright yellow animal feed that was popular in the 19th century in that locality. There is, however, a story that the name was intended to be California. The painters that were brought in to paint the sign outside the town were too drunk and only got as far as Califon before they blacked out.
